Plantation House was once the village rectory — a handsome Georgian building set in walled gardens. Today, it is a quiet, chef-led hotel and restaurant, run with exacting care by a small team.
A boutique hotel
What we are, quietly.
Plantation House is not a corporate hotel, and we don't pretend otherwise. We are a Georgian rectory with eight bedrooms, a chef-proprietor-led restaurant, a small and devoted team, and a decades-old reputation for doing the everyday things exceptionally well. If you're looking for a lobby, a concierge desk, or an all-night bar, this isn't it. If you're looking for a quiet, elegant, lived-in country house where dinner is a careful occasion and breakfast is never rushed, you've found the right place.
We hold 5 AA Gold Stars, 2 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, the AA Breakfast Award, and were named Best Small Hotel in Britain 2022 by the Good Hotel Guide. We think of these as encouraging rather than definitive — what matters is whether the night you spend here feels restorative.
The house
Good bones, lovingly kept.
The building itself is late-Georgian, with the generous proportions and tall sash windows you'd expect. It has been a rectory, a farmhouse, and then — for the last several decades — a small hotel. Every room has been carefully restored, with the original joinery kept wherever possible and the occasional gently contemporary detail quietly introduced.
The kitchen
Chef-proprietor, and it shows.
The kitchen is led by the chef-proprietor, with a small brigade. Everything on the dinner menu — the breads, the patisserie, the ice-creams, the chocolates — is made here. A significant share of tonight's ingredients will have been picked from the kitchen garden, caught in the estuary, or carried in that morning from farms we know by name.
The menu changes daily. There is no set formula. There is, very deliberately, no rush.

The feeling
Like staying with friends who really, really know how.
The nicest compliment we hear from guests is that Plantation House feels like the house of a friend who happens to have an astonishing kitchen and an eye for bedlinen. We aren't trying to be everything to everyone. We are trying to be a very particular sort of quiet, elegant, unhurried stay — and to do that as well as we possibly can.
